At Spike we have experience grooming cats, rats, hamsters, ponies, cows, and rabbits. We are open to discussing grooming on any animal that is under 80lbs (sorry, no Guinea Pigs though as Liz is allergic!) We only groom animals who are calm and comfortable being handled by humans. We believe grooming should be a stress free environment regardless of species. Cats are given a double bath with clarifying cat shampoo first, then either a lanolin cat shampoo , color enhancing cat shampoo, or moisturizing cat shampoo depending on the animal's needs. Every cat is conditioned after the bath to restore moisture to the skin and coat. After the bath kitties are wrapped in a towel and placed in a donut style dog bed while we use a heated stand dryer and a low powered hand dryer to fluff them while we brush out their coat. Special cat specific blades are used for any necessary shaving. Hamsters get a simple dust bath and brush out with a toothbrush and spoolie. Light nail trimming can be done on request. Rats get the full spa treatment - double shampoo with a degreasing shampoo first, and a skin moisturizing shampoo second, followed by a moisturizing conditioner. We use a gentle exfoliant when washing their tails, and follow with a light massage of coconut oil to return moisture. Rats are then gently blowdried to their comfort level , they can finish drying in a wire kennel with ambient or heated dryer.
